Tuileries Gardens

view toward rue de Rivoli

The Tuileries Gardens are where you go to rest your feet after a long, tiring day. That is not to say the gardens are not a prime destination in and of themselves. But the location is so central, it's impossible not to want to sit and rest there after walking Paris. They begin where the Louvre leaves off, and stretch all the way to Place de la Concorde.

Looking toward the Louvre and the Arc du Carrousel. You can rent a sailboat and push it with a stick around the fountain.

Many mythological figures overlook the Tuileries

There is always ice cream.

And lunch breaks.

And naps.

You know, of course, that we have many wonderful memories of RESTING there in the Tuileries. Actually, you, Don and Donica rested while I took pics. Hmmm, I think I did sit down for a few minutes, as I recall. Remember how we had to find some stray chairs to group together? And all those incredible sculptures by--who was it?

Ruth, Cities need resting places. We may have resting places but not relaxing. Tuileries Gardens seem to be both resting and relaxing

Ginnie, yes, every time I've been there I have to find chairs and drag them over. In fact last time, I helped a lady carry hers a long way. It's such a communal thing.

Rauf, it is both, you are right. And there is so much beauty all around.

The city seems so crowded. How does one rest amidst the chaos and noise? I often wear earplugs to maintain my sanity- I carry them with me in my purse always! The other night, we went to dinner with Swede's family at the Cheesecake Factory. Within minutes, I had a brutal headache. I popped the earplugs in, and moments later my headache was gone. I share an office with 8 teachers. I am the only one who wears earplugs. It's my trademark. I think I am developing autism as a result of Swede's influence in my life.

Rachel, that is very interesting. I've never heard this before. Can you hear people speak? Are the earplugs to shut out the chaotic noise only?

Yes, there are lot of people, but it is far worse in Dublin. So congested there!

It's the volume of noise, mostly. I used to go out to Irish Pubs and coffee shops. Then one time Swede and I went to a restaurant. Because of the music and chaotic noises, he turned into a deer with headlights shining on him. From that point on, we have never gone into a restaurant unless it is not during peak hours, or if we know that it has a quiet atmosphere always. There are very few places like this. Then, we went on that Vipassana Meditation sit, and I wore earplugs for 6 days straight, unless I was walking around the grounds. It's that I have created a higher level of awareness of sound. It's quite a beautiful thing of course, but the sensitivity creates discomfort at times. It's similar to eating more healthy. If you go back and eat something unhealthy- you really feel it!
